Shapes Of Padding

Shapes and Structures
In the Elizabethan Era they had two main shapes and structures to their hair, the single padding or the heart shape. These can be decorated in varied ways such as crimped or curled.
This is evident in Queen Elizabeths Armada Portrait where she has a heart shaped structure.

Amy Winehouse is a prime example of someone who brought padding to this century, her large beehive was one of her famous traits. This is more similar to the single padding of the Elizabethan Era, but of a much larger scale.

The first is the single padding on top of the head. To do this create a large square section at the top middle of the head, leave a thin gap round the edge for crimping. With the remaining hair, plait and secure onto the head. Then secure the padding to the head. Pin the crimped hair over the padding and you have your first look.

To create the Heart shape look you follow similar steps, however you create two equal sections rather than one. You can also leave some extra hair at the front to curl and place over the padding.
